Where to Get Your Free Credit Report

November 20, 2024•6 min read

Section 72 of the National Credit Act. That's the actual law that gives you the right to check your credit report, from every single bureau, completely free, once a year, no reason required.

Most South Africans have never used it. In fact, the National Credit Regulator found that out of over 22 million credit-active consumers in this country, only around a million people a year actually claim their free report. That means the vast majority of people are walking around with no real idea what's sitting on their file, waiting to find out the hard way when a bank says no.

Let's fix that today.

I'm going to tell you exactly where to get your free report from each bureau, how the process actually works, and why checking just one isn't enough.

First, understand what you're actually entitled to.

Under the National Credit Act, every one of the major credit bureaus operating in South Africa has to give you access to your credit report, free, once every twelve months.

Not a summary.

Not a teaser.

Your actual report.

And there are four bureaus you need to know about TransUnion, Experian, Compuscan, and XDS.

Each one can hold slightly different information about you, because not every creditor reports to every bureau. That's exactly why getting one free report and assuming you've seen the whole picture is a mistake.

You haven't. You've seen a quarter of it, maybe less.

Let's go through each one.

TransUnion.

This is the largest and most widely used bureau in South Africa, and probably the one most people have heard of.

Go to transunion.co.za and look for their free annual credit report option.

You'll need to register with your South African ID number, and you'll go through an identity verification step usually a few security questions based on your own credit history, things only you would know.

Once you're verified, you can download your report, typically as a PDF, and it'll show your account listings, payment history, and any adverse listings like defaults or judgments.

Experian.

Head to experian.co.za and look for their consumer credit report portal they run this through platforms called My Credit Check and My Credit Expert.

Worth knowing, Experian acquired Compuscan a few years back, so their systems are more closely linked than people realize, but Compuscan still operates and reports separately, so don't assume checking Experian covers Compuscan too it doesn't. Same process here, register with your ID, verify your identity, and you're entitled to your free annual report.

Compuscan.

Go directly to compuscan.co.za, register with your ID number, and request your free annual report the same way.

Compuscan tends to be the bureau that catches smaller retail and furniture accounts that don't always report elsewhere, so don't skip this one just because you've already checked TransUnion or Experian this is often exactly where an old, forgotten account is quietly sitting.

XDS.

Go to xds.co.za and register there as well. XDS access sometimes works slightly differently to the other three depending on the service you go through, so read what's on offer carefully when you're on the site, and make sure you're specifically requesting your free statutory report, not a paid subscription product they might also be offering alongside it.

Now here's the process tip that saves you a headache.

Have your South African ID number ready, along with a working cellphone number and email address that are actually current the identity verification step usually cross-references your own credit history to confirm it's really you, so if your contact details on file with any of these bureaus are outdated, that verification step can get frustrating fast.

Set aside about an hour total to properly register and pull all four, not five minutes assuming it's instant.

Here's what to actually do once you've got all four reports in front of you, because pulling them is only step one.

Go through each one and check three things specifically.

First, do you recognise every single account listed.

Second, does the status of each account match reality paid accounts should say paid, closed accounts should say closed, not sitting there looking open or in arrears when you know that's not true.

Third, check for anything that looks old — a default or judgment that's been there for years and, based on the legal timeframes for how long these things are allowed to stay on your file, should probably have aged off by now but hasn't.

And specifically compare the four reports against each other.

If something appears on Compuscan that doesn't show up on TransUnion, that tells you exactly which creditor is only reporting to that one bureau which is valuable information, because it tells you where a problem could be quietly hiding that you'd never catch if you only ever checked your usual one.

If you find something inaccurate, outdated, or unfair on any of these reports, you have the legal right under the National Credit Act to dispute it directly with that specific bureau.

Each bureau is required to investigate and respond within a set window once you lodge a dispute so this isn't a vague request into the void, it's a formal process with an actual timeline they're required to follow. But remember, a correction on one bureau doesn't automatically flow through to the other three. If the same incorrect listing is sitting on more than one report, each one needs its own dispute.

I'd also say this; do this well before you need it, not the month you're applying for a bond or car finance.

Bureau updates take time to process once a dispute is resolved, so if you're planning any major finance application in the next year, pulling and checking all four reports now, rather than later, gives any correction the runway it needs to actually reflect before a lender ever sees your file.

If you go through all four and everything's genuinely clean accounts you recognize, statuses that match reality, nothing outdated hanging around that's a great outcome, and now you actually know it instead of just hoping.

But if you find something wrong, don't just note it and move on.

Old, inaccurate, or unfair listings don't fix themselves, and the process to properly dispute and resolve them across multiple bureaus takes real persistence which is exactly the part we specialize in at Betafin.

If you'd rather have someone experienced go through your reports with you, or handle the dispute correspondence with TransUnion, Experian, Compuscan, and XDS on your behalf, book a free assessment link's below, thirty minutes, no cost.

Less than five percent of South Africans use this right every year.

You're about to be one of the few who actually does.

Go pull your reports all four, not just one.
